The driver CPC course has been an additonal qualification since 2008/2009 for coach, lorry and bus drivers in the industry.
Just holding a LGV/HGV is no longer sufficient. If you're driving for Hire or Reward you will need to hold a Drivers Qualification Card [DQC] by completing the Driver Certificate of Professional Competence (Driver CPC) in addition.
Wiseknightâs aim is to improve the profession by reflecting a professional and positive image, and as a result encouraging more people to drive such vehicles as a profession. In order to achieve this objective we start with the courses that we provide such as Driver CPC.
There are two groups for this course, the initial driver CPC and periodic training.
Initial Driver CPC
A driver who passed their car test after the 1st of January 1997 and who wants to take an LGV test (LGV training / HGV training) after the 10th September 2009 [This is when the Driver CPC legislation came into force for lorry drivers] Will have to complete two extra units (units 2&4 theory & practical):
- Unit 1a: Multiple Choice Theory Test
- Unit 1b: Hazard Perception Road Sense
- Unit 2: Case Study ( CPC)
- Unit 3: LGV Training & Test
- Unit 4: Demonstration Test (CPC)
Once the driver has passed all the above they will be issued with a Driver Qualification Card [DQC] The card will be valid for 5 years and expire on the eve of when the driver passed their LGV/HGV test. During those 5 years the driver will have to complete the 35 hours [5 days] of periodic training which is usually classroom based to enable the driver to have a new DQC in place for when the first one expires. This will then be continuous training with the DQC being renewed every 5 years. If the driver only completes the LGV/HGV training and doesn't complete the extra units, they will get their LGV/HGV qualification but will NOT be able to drive professionally until the extra two units are in place.
Periodic Training.
If a driver holds an LGV/HGV licence before the 10th Sept 2009 [This is when the legislation came in]. The driver has until the 9th Sept 2014 to complete the 35 hours (5 days) of periodic training usually classroom based. This will then give the driver a DQC valid until the 9th Sept 2019. If the DQC is not in place by the 9th Sept 2014 then the driver will not be able to drive professionally.
Between the 10th Sept 2014 and the 9th Sept 2019 the process is repeated by the driver doing another 35 hours to have another DQC in place for when the 1st expires on the 9th Sept 2019. The new card will then be valid until the 9th Sept 2024. This is also continuous training.
